We are excited to launch a new free suite of dementia specific training and resources. Our new Advance Project Toolkit (Dementia) makes initiating courageous end-of-life conversations and assessing palliative needs of people living with dementia, easier to enable better care.

It has been identified that people living with dementia and their carers often don’t have the opportunity to discuss advance care planning and access to palliative care, resulting in unmet needs.

Our dementia specific training and resources have been specifically created for clinicians, managers, and careworkers in aged and primary care settings, to build greater confidence, capacity, and skills.

A media release about the journal article is also available.

Nurse-led advance care planning and palliative care in primary healthcare: a qualitative study. The findings of a qualitative study evaluating nurses experiences of participating in the first phase of The Advance Project in general practice settings across Australia has been published in a peer reviewed journal article. The findings suggest that The Advance Project training and resources helped build nurses confidence to discuss sensitive topics around end-of-life care with their patients. Findings from the study informed development of the second phase of The Advance Project. In the second phase of The Advance Project the program was expanded to also include training and resources for General Practitioners and Practice Managers, to enable team-based initiation of advance care planning and palliative care needs assessment in general practice settings.

New interactive PDF versions of the Advance Project consumer resources are available. We are committed to making further developments in our processes and consumer resources this year. The Advance Project resources have been refreshed based on the feedback we received, and these resources have now been converted to interactive editable PDFs to make assessing patients and their carers’ palliative and supportive care needs in general practice settings much easier. A new electronic fillable PDF version of the guidebook for patients is also available to help them prepare for advance care planning discussions. If you prefer printable versions of these booklets, they are still available and can be downloaded via the Advance Project Resources page for registered Advance Project members. Visit www.theadvanceproject.com.au to access these new resources.
